Chengdu is the city visitors fall for. Sichuan’s capital moves at half Beijing’s speed, the food is arguably China’s best, and the panda count is unbeatable. It has enough temples, tea houses and alleys for two rich days, plus heavyweight day trips.
Two to three days, ideally between Xi’an and the south or as a gateway to Tibet-adjacent western Sichuan.
Giant pandas, the right way
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the main event:
- Arrive at opening (7:30–8:00). Pandas eat actively early and sleep by 11:00. This single decision makes or breaks the visit.
- Walk the adult panda enclosures first, then the nursery (season-dependent) and red pandas.
- Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道) + free shuttle; a Didi from downtown is ~30 min/¥40.
- Want more? The Dujiangyan volunteer program lets you prepare food and enclosures for a half day — book weeks ahead online.
The city itself
- People’s Park — the essential Chengdu afternoon: bamboo-tea tea house (¥20–30 a seat), ear-cleaning masters, matchmaking corner, and seniors’ choir battles.
- Kuanzhai Alley & Jinli — restored Qing-era lanes; touristy but atmospheric at dusk, with street snacks (dan dan noodles, sugar paintings).
- Wuhou Shrine & Wenshu Monastery — Three Kingdoms history and the city’s most tranquil temple complex (the vegetarian lunch is a sleeper hit).
- Anshun Bridge — night shot of the illuminated riverside bridge, with the bar strip nearby.
Eating in Chengdu
The UNESCO City of Gastronomy earns it:
| Dish | What it is | Heat level |
|---|---|---|
| Hotpot (火锅) | bubbling chili-oil broth, table-side | Choose your level |
| Mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) | silken tofu, minced beef, numbing Sichuan pepper | Medium |
| Dan dan noodles (担担面) | chili oil, minced pork, peanuts | Medium |
| Sweet water noodles (甜水面) | thick noodles, sweet-spicy sauce | Mild |
| Chuan chuan (串串) | hotpot on skewers, pay by stick | Choose your level |
Say “wei la” (微辣, mild) or “bu la” (不辣, no spice) — they will accommodate.
Getting around and paying
The metro reaches the panda base, both airports and every sight above, and a ride rarely costs more than ¥8 — you tap in with Alipay or WeChat Pay rather than buying paper tickets. Sort that setup out before you fly; plenty of noodle stalls and taxi queues are 扫码-only, with no card fallback.
Rail is the way onward. Chongqing is about 1.5 hours away and Xi’an roughly three, and the high-speed rail guide covers booking windows — 15 days ahead, and much earlier for holiday weeks.
Day trips
- Leshan Giant Buddha — a 71 m Tang-dynasty Buddha carved into a river cliff; descend the cliff stairs beside it. ~1 h by high-speed rail.
- Mount Emei — sacred Buddhist mountain with monasteries and (lucky days) a sea of clouds; a full day minimum, overnight option with sunrise at the Golden Summit.
- Dujiangyan Irrigation System — 2,200-year-old engineering still in use; pairs with the panda volunteer program.
Logistics
Chengdu has two airports (CTU/TFU) with dense domestic links; high-speed rail puts Xi’an 3 h away and Chongqing under 1.5 h. The metro covers all city sights listed above. Standard hotel booking notes apply — downtown near Chunxi Road is the convenient base.
Under the visa-free transit rules, Sichuan is an approved province, so Chengdu works as an entry or exit point on a visa-free route.
Frequently asked questions
What time should I visit the Chengdu panda base?
Arrive for the 7:30–8:00 opening. Pandas are most active for their morning feed and nap by late morning. Booking is online-only (¥55) via the base's WeChat channel or Trip.com; metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道) puts you a short shuttle ride away.
Is Chengdu food only spicy hotpot?
Not at all. Ask for "wei la" (微辣, mild spice) everywhere, and explore non-Sichuan classics: noodle shops, street barbecue, and one of China's best teahouse cultures. Chongqing-style hotpot is the fiery exception, not the rule.
How do I get to Leshan Giant Buddha from Chengdu?
High-speed trains from Chengdu East or South to Leshan take about 1 hour (¥51–64). From Leshan station, bus 603 or a taxi reaches the Buddha scenic area in ~30 minutes. A half-day visit is enough.
Can I hold a baby panda?
No — the holding programs ended years ago. The closest legal experience today is the Dujiangyan panda base volunteer program, a half-day care activity a short trip from the city.
