Guilin is not one sight but a whole genre of landscape: hundreds of limestone karst peaks rising out of rice paddies and rivers, the scenery printed on the ¥20 note and painted on Chinese screens for a thousand years. The formula that works: one night in Guilin city, two in Yangshuo, with the river connecting the two.
Day 1 — Guilin city
- Elephant Trunk Hill — the city symbol, a karst arch over the river (quick photo stop).
- Sun & Moon Pagodas at night — the lakeside twin pagodas, best after dark.
- Diecai Hill or Folded Brocade Hill — sunset climbs over the karst skyline.
- Guilin rice noodles (桂林米粉) — the local breakfast obsession, ¥7–12 a bowl. Eat where office workers eat, before 10 am.
Day 2 — The Li River
Two ways to do the classic drift from Guilin to Yangshuo:
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full cruise (Zhujiang Pier → Yangshuo) | 4–4.5 h | ~¥215–270 | Comfort, luggage aboard |
| Xingping bamboo raft | ~80 min | ~¥120 | Photographers, budget |
Either way you drift past the Nine Horses Fresco Hill and the Yellow Cloth Shoal — the exact scene on the back of the ¥20 note (have one ready for the photo).
Day 3 — Yangshuo countryside
- Yulong River bamboo raft — a gentler, prettier float than the Li River, past water buffalo and villages.
- Bike or e-bike the Yulong River road — flat, car-lite, and the single best morning in the region; rent in town for ¥20–50/day.
- Moon Hill & Big Banyan — quick countryside stops; serious climbers should look at the rock-climbing schools (Yangshuo is Asia’s climbing cradle).
- Impression Liu Sanjie — Zhang Yimou’s outdoor light show on the river itself, 600+ performers; book seats B–K for the center view.
- West Street — Yangshuo’s tourist heart; fine for dinner, better two streets back.
The rice terraces (add a day)
The Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) Rice Terraces, 2–2.5 hours north of Guilin, are a different kind of spectacle — sculpted hillsides around Ping’an and Dazhai villages. June’s flooded mirrors and October’s gold are the iconic moments. Shuttle buses and day tours run from Guilin; overnight stays in a hillside guesthouse are the photographer’s move.
Logistics
- Fly: Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) connects to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and more.
- Rail: Guilin’s stations sit on the high-speed network — Guangzhou 2.5 h, Shenzhen ~3 h, direct trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon.
- Getting around: Guilin→Yangshuo buses and the cruise both work; within Yangshuo, Didi and hotel shuttles fill the gaps.
Practical notes
Reserve cruise and raft tickets one to two days ahead between April and October — boat grade changes the price, never the scenery, and the hotel desk is usually the cheapest booking route.
Payment is almost entirely QR-based: raft operators, bike rentals and noodle shops all run on mobile payments, so get Alipay or WeChat Pay working before you leave the city, and carry some cash for Ping’an village. Signal drops fast in the karst — download offline maps, and check eSIM and roaming options before boarding the plane.
Guangxi is included in the visa-free transit areas, and Guilin’s airport is one of the designated entry/exit ports — a popular finish line for a visa-free loop that starts in Beijing or Shanghai.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better: the full Li River cruise or the Xingping raft?
The full Guilin–Yangshuo cruise (4–4.5 hours, ~¥215–270) is the classic experience and moves your luggage south. The Xingping bamboo raft (~¥120) covers the single most photogenic stretch — the view on the ¥20 banknote — in 80 minutes and costs far less. Photographers often choose Xingping; convenience-minded visitors take the full cruise.
How do I get to Guilin?
Fly into Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) with domestic connections from every major city, or take high-speed rail — Guilin is about 2.5 hours from Guangzhou, 3.5 from Hong Kong West Kowloon (direct trains) and under 5 hours from Changsha.
Is Yangshuo good for families?
Very. The bamboo rafts have life jackets, cycling routes are flat, the Impression Liu Sanjie light show is a hit with kids, and rock-climbing schools offer kid-friendly sessions.
When do the Longji rice terraces look best?
Mid-May to June (mirror-water planting), July–September (green), and late September to mid-October (golden harvest). Winter is bare but quiet.
